With the emergence of useful applications and improvement in technology, the market is expected to grow thanks to the Olympics. This is expected to result in 4.5 million subscribers and US$231 million in set-top box (STB) revenue in 2008.Presently only Shanghai and a few South China cities have noteworthy levels of IPTV users.

From the consumer perspective, most are used to free TV, and familiarity with IPTV is low. Though set- top boxes are priced at around US$63 this is still perceived as an unwanted cost. Movies on demand is the service most people want from IPTV. There is also large potential in the services of video chatting, online gaming, online studying and so on. As for the 11 associated applications in a recent survey, TV-based applications and movies on demand garner higher interest than other interactive applications - though the video phone has some takers.

Away from the interactive space, LCD screens are a strong existing medium spanning commercial buildings,residences, supermarkets and transit media. It has approximately 85,300 display units in its commercial location network, 38,700 display units in its in-store network, and 99,700 advertising poster frames installed in China. Growth in this sector is coming from rate hikes, broadening the advertiser base and geographical expansion into lower-tier cities. Currently spends are around U$160 million and expected to grow at 30% and 50% over the next two years. Rate rises in the top markets have not met with uchopposition so far.

One consequence of Focus Media's success has been that many municipal governments have begun to back their own local LCD ad network on buses or other transport networks, as has the recently relaunched Touch Media. As China provides more and more growth for global giants and as local Chinese companies increase focus on brand-building, we estimate media investment will increase 19% in 2007. This is actually rather restrained compared to recent years, but many marketers are conserving funds for the 2008 Olympic bonanza.

The Beijing Olympics will we think accelerate media investment growth to 29% in 2008, though this would still be in line with the 24% compound-average annual media growth 2001-2006.

Three key factors propel media investment:

Rising incomes and low consumer price inflation fuel consumer demand and hence topline sales growth for marketers. Urban per-capita disposable income grew 87% between 2000 and 2006 from U$816 to U$1,527. Retail sales also nearly doubled (at current prices) between 2000 and 2005.

As retail distribution extends to 600 smaller cities, marketers will spend more money reaching these new consumers as they catch up with their Shanghai compatriots.

Media inflation will also continue to drive the increase in investment. Television especially remains a sellers' medium in which the big channels like CCTV, Beijing TV and Shanghai Media Group have strong negotiating power as they deliver key audiences and markets and have no competitors that can match them. Also,the demand for airtime remains very high compared to
the supply on these big TV channels, where strict airtime restrictions apply. We expect media price inflation of around 15% in the coming year.

The Olympics will blur this further. Finally a key indicator which makes us extremely bullish on China is the adex-to-GDP ratio.
