The Chinese economy grew 10.7% last year and is likely to maintain this momentum in the near future; 11.1% was recently recorded for the first quarter of 2007, which is a little too much momentu for some.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) publishes an annual Asian Development Outlook. The March 2007 edition expects economic growth will moderate slightly in the next two years because of tight macroeconomic controls and government intervention to alter the growth pattern.

Yet even after this 'slowdown' the economy is estimated to grow 10% in 2007 and 9.8% in 2008. It is no surprise that media investment continues to rise strongly.

As China provides more and more growth for global giants and as local Chinese companies increase focus on brand-building, we estimate media investment will increase 19% in 2007. This is actually rather restrained compared to recent years, but many marketers are conserving funds for the 2008 Olympic bonanza.

The Beijing Olympics will we think accelerate media investment growth to 29% in 2008, though this would still be in line with the 24% compound-average annual media growth 2001-2006.

Three key factors propel media investment:

Rising incomes and low consumer price inflation fuel consumer demand and hence topline sales growth for marketers. Urban per-capita disposable income grew 87% between 2000 and 2006 from U$816 to U$1,527. Retail sales also nearly doubled (at current prices) between 2000 and 2005.

As retail distribution extends to 600 smaller cities, marketers will spend more money reaching these new consumers as they catch up with their Shanghai compatriots.

Media inflation will also continue to drive the increase in investment. Television especially remains a sellers' medium in which the big channels like CCTV, Beijing TV and Shanghai Media Group have strong negotiating power as they deliver key audiences and markets and have no competitors that can match them. Also,the demand for airtime remains very high compared to
the supply on these big TV channels, where strict airtime restrictions apply. We expect media price inflation of around 15% in the coming year.

In summary the China media market will continue to be among the most exciting in the world.Advertiser options multiply, especially in the digital space, plus events, sponsorship and other branded content, providing many new ways for advertisers to explore connections with the consumer.The line between above and below the line is blurred. The Olympics will blur this further. Finally a key indicator which makes us extremely bullish on China is the adex-to-GDP ratio. This has more than doubled in the past five years to nearly 1% today, which is approaching USA levels and already exceeds that of Western Europe. We expect the dragon will soon catch up with the eagle on this metric.
